"Since I was little, I would bake Italian 'S' cookies together with my Nonna every year around Christmas time. It is a family tradition and recipe that has been passed on for generations. It was fun getting my hands dirty when playing with and shaping the dough, but I especially loved tasting them warm out of the oven!" -Julia
makes about 60 cookies
ingredients
5 eggs
1½ cup sugar
1⅓ cup crisco oil (or vegetable oil)
1 tbsp vanilla
4 cups flour
5 tsp baking powder
icing sugar
method
preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
whisk together eggs, sugar, oil, and vanilla in very large bowl
in a separate bowl, mix flour and baking powder
add dry ingredients to wet, whisking. when dough becomes too thick to whisk, change to wooden spoon
sprinkle icing sugar on a clean plate and spoon 1 tbsp of dough on top
roll gently in icing sugar with fingers and form into an 's' shape
bake in batches on baking sheet, about 1 inch apart (they will grow in the oven)
the cookies are ready when they start to turn golden - a very quick 2-5 minutes is all it takes, so watch them! cookies will harden as they cool
Let cool + enjoy!
